Democrat Von Wilpert Gains Ground as Republican Desmond Dips in Competitive Contest in Redistricted CA-48, Where Top Issues Favor Dems:

San Diego City Councilwoman Marni Von Wilpert today finds herself leading San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond by 9 points in SurveyUSA's latest CA-48 polling conducted exclusively for KGTV 10 News and the San Diego Union Tribune.

Von Wilpert takes 47% of the vote today, up 2 points from an identical SurveyUSA poll released in early September. Desmond, at 38% today, is down 4 points. 15% of likely voters tell SurveyUSA they are undecided, including half of those who say they will probably, not definitely vote, and a third of both voters under age 35 and those with high school educations – typically lower-propensity voters, especially in midterm election years.

Nationally, SurveyUSA sees this as a tough year for Republican candidates, and the issues voters here cite as most important are ones which help the Democrats: 30% of likely voters (up from 26% last month and 23% during the primary campaigns in May) now say inflation / the economy is the biggest issue facing Congress right now, and those voters favor Von Wilpert by 6 percentage points. That's followed closely by the 24% (up from 19% in April) who say it's threats to democracy; those voters give Von Wilpert a 53-point advantage. The remaining issue chosen by more than 10% of voters, election security / voting rights at 12%, is one where Desmond leads, in this case by an overwhelming 72 points. He also holds a 48-point advantage among the 6% who say immigration enforcement is most important, while Von Wilpert leads by 36 points among the 9% most focused on health care and by 18 points among the 5% who say wars / foreign policy is most important.

Additional issues also appear to weigh down the Desmond campaign. 33% of likely voters approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as President while 61% disapprove; Von Wilpert leads by 67 points among those who disapprove, while Desmond leads by 84 points among the third who approve. Desmond leads by 73 points among the likely voters who say they approve of the job Congress is doing – but that's just 16% of likely voters. Von Wilpert leads by 41 points among the 71% who disapprove. The third of likely voters who approve of the job ICE is doing back Desmond by 84 points, but the 60% who disapprove give Von Wilpert a 69-point advantage. And the war in Iran, which just 25% of likely voters approve of and which many may closely associate with the rising costs of fuel and goods, also works against the Republican candidate: those who approve of the war in Iran support Desmond by an 82-point margin, but the much larger group who disapprove, 63%, back Von Wilpert by 61 points.

Elsewhere, Desmond leads by 76 points among Republicans and 72 points among conservatives, by 14 points in rural parts of the district, by 4 points among parents of children under age 18, and by 3 points among those with high school educations. Von Wilpert leads by 92 points among progressives, by 85 points among Democrats, and by 84 among liberals. She is up by 28 points in urban parts of the district, by 22 points among both independents and voters under age 35, and by 19 points among those with the lowest household incomes and 18 among college graduates.

Fully crosstabbed results for these and for additional questions on the impact of last year's Proposition 50 follow, including interactive tracking graphs, denoted by the "triangle-T" icon appearing on their question numbers, for most. Those tracking graphs show changes in results over time, from April and May 2026 during the primaries to September and today in the general election.

About the Research / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 685 adults from California's redistricted 48th congressional district 10/01/26 through 10/07/26 using a mixed mode, blended sample approach. Of the adults, 589 were determined to be registered voters; of the registered voters, 518 were identified by SurveyUSA as being likely to vote in the November election and were asked the substantive questions which follow. 47% of likely voters were interviewed on the display of their smartphone, tablet or other electronic device using non-probability sample of internet panel members provided by Cint USA. 53% were interviewed using probability-based telephone sample of registered voters from Aristotle of Washington, DC, using SMS-to-Web, where a live operator hand-texted respondents on their mobile phones, secured their cooperation, and linked them to an online version of the survey. The full pool of respondents was weighted to US Census-derived targets for gender, age, ethnicity, and home ownership, and to California's CA-48 partisan registration data.
