Von Wilpert Sees Slight Advantage in Redistricted CA-48 Contest, Where 1 in 4 Voters See 'Threats to Democracy' As Top Issue Facing Congress:

SurveyUSA's latest exclusive polling for KGTV 10 News and the San Diego Union Tribune in California's 48th Congressional District shows Democrat Marni Von Wilpert just ahead of Republican Jim Desmond, 45% to 42%, with 13% of likely voters as yet undecided.

Each of the candidates runs strongly among their political base; Desmond takes 80% of Republicans' votes, Von Wilpert 84% of Democrats' votes; Desmond is at 82% among conservatives, Von Wilpert at 92% among progressives and 82% among liberals. Independents – here defined as voters who tell SurveyUSA they are registered to vote as neither a Republican nor a Democrat and who do not lean toward either party – break for Desmond by a 29-point margin, 49% to 20% – while those who describe themselves as moderates give Von Wilpert a 16-point lead, 48% to 32%.

Von Wilpert leads by 19 points in urban parts of the district; Desmond leads by 10 in rural areas; the two candidates run evenly in the suburbs. Von Wilpert has a 15-point advantage among those with college degrees; Desmond is up by 5 points among those who have attended some college, and by 26 points among those with high school educations. Von Wilpert leads by 14 points among voters with the lowest household incomes and has a 2-point edge in middle-income households; the two are tied in upper-income homes. While Von Wilpert is nominally ahead among most other demographic groups – men and women, young and old, white and Latino – those leads are all in low single-digits, and should be categorized as slim edges at best.

On the issues, Von Wilpert leads by 62 points among the 23% of likely voters who say threats to democracy is the top issue facing Congress right now, by 7 points among the 26% who say inflation and the economy is the top issue, and by 3 points among the 10% who say it's healthcare, Medicaid, or Medicare. Desmond by 59 points among the 17% who say election security and voting rights is the top issue, by 39 points among the 6% most focused on immigration enforcement, and by 12 points among the 6% who call wars and foreign policy most important.

Overall, voters are mostly satisfied with their choices in the race; 22% say they are very satisfied, 44% somewhat satisfied – that's two-thirds of likely voters. 20% are less happy with their choices, with 16% saying they are not very satisfied and 4% not satisfied at all.

Fully crosstabbed results for these and for additional questions on the impact of last year's Proposition 50; approval ratings for President Trump, Congress, and ICE, and on the war in Iran all follow, with interactive tracking graphs, denoted by the "triangle-T" icon appearing on their question numbers, for most. Those tracking graphs show changes in results over time, from April and May 2026 to today. Note those previous questions were asked of likely voters in the primary, not the general election, making them a similar but not an exact duplicate universe.

About the Research / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 625 adults from California's redistricted 48th congressional district 08/27/26 through 09/01/26 using a mixed mode, blended sample approach. Of the adults, 568 were determined to be registered voters; of the registered voters, 522 were identified by SurveyUSA as being likely to vote in the November election and were asked the substantive questions which follow. 48% of likely primary voters were interviewed on the display of their smartphone, tablet or other electronic device using non-probability sample of internet panel members provided by Cint USA. 52% were interviewed using probability-based telephone sample of registered voters from Aristotle of Washington, DC, using SMS-to-Web, where a live operator hand-texted respondents on their mobile phones, secured their cooperation, and linked them to an online version of the survey. The full pool of respondents was weighted to US Census-derived targets for gender, age, ethnicity, and home ownership, and to California's CA-48 partisan registration data.
