Results of SurveyUSA Election Poll #28047

Democrat Roy Cooper Has Double-Digit Lead Over Republican Michael Whatley in Race For Open North Carolina US Senate Seat:

Results of the exclusive WRAL/WSOC Poll conducted by SurveyUSA show former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper defeating former Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley by a 14 point margin if the election for US Senate were held today.

Cooper takes 54% of the vote today, Whatley 40%, three weeks from the election and days before in-person early voting begins. 1% of likely voters say they will vote for another candidate; 5% are undecided.

Whatley leads by 80 points among Republicans; Cooper leads by 91 points among Democrats. Independents break for the Democrat by 31 points, 59% to 28%. Cooper runs more strongly among liberals than Whatley does among conservatives: Cooper takes 96% of the vote among very liberal voters and 87% of the vote among somewhat liberal voters, while Whatley takes 84% of very conservative votes and 74% of somewhat conservative votes. Combined, Cooper leads by 85 points among all liberals, Whatley by 63 points among all conservatives. Like independents, moderates favor the Democrat, by a slightly wider 37-point margin. Whatley leads by 8 points among gun owners, by 5 in rural parts of the state, and by 3 points among white voters. He also has a nominal 1-point advantage in southern and coastal NC. Cooper leads by 62 points among Black voters, by 34 points among Latinos, and by 34 points among the youngest and typically least reliable voters. Cooper's lead among voters age 35-49 is just over half his lead among those 18-34, 18 points – but his lead among voters age 50+ is just 4 points. Cooper leads by 37 points in urban parts of the state and by 20 in the suburbs; he's also up by 29 points in greater Raleigh, 16 in the Greensboro area, 8 points in Western NC, and 6 points in greater Charlotte.

Just over half of likely voters, 51%, say they plan to vote in person during early one-stop voting. 36% say they'll vote in-person on election day; 12% by mail-in or absentee ballot. Those in Western NC and senior citizens are the most likely to say they will vote early in-person; Latinos, parents of children under 18, and 50 to 64-year-olds are the most likely to say they'll vote in-person on Election Day. While very liberal voters, at 19%, are among the most likely to say they will vote absentee, very conservative voters, at 17%, are close behind, and there is little difference between voting method preference for each candidate's voters.

43% of likely voters say they have full confidence votes in the election will be counted accurately, including 57% of those who have already voted and small majorities of those in urban areas, somewhat liberal voters, 50 to 64-year-olds, Cooper voters, and those voting by mail. 42% say they have some confidence votes will be accurately counted, including majorities of those who will probably vote, somewhat conservative voters, and those in Western NC. Just 13% say they have little (10%) or no (3%) confidence in the vote counting, including highs of 27% among those voting by mail, 26% in the greater Charlotte area, and 21% of both very conservative voters and voters who say they were impacted by Hurricane Helene.

The relative net job approval numbers for the President and for North Carolina's current governor may be factors in how people are voting for US Senate: President Trump today has a net job approval rating of -23 among all registered voters, with 37% approving and 60% disapproving of the job he is doing as President, while Governor Josh Stein has a net approval of +14, with 46% approving and 32% disapproving of his job performance. Whatley voters give the President a +67 and the Governor a -24; Cooper voters give the President a -93 and the Governor a +52.

About the Research / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 900 North Carolina adults 10/07/26 through 10/11/26. Of the adults, 778 were identified as being registered to vote; of the registered voters, 643 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the November general election or to have already cast their ballots and were asked the substantive questions which follow. This research was conducted online, using nonprobability sample of online adult panelists chosen randomly by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. The combined pool of survey respondents was weighted to US Census ACS targets for gender, age, race, education, and home ownership, and to North Carolina party affiliation data.
