What if it Weren't Biden?

Majorities of Likely November Voters Say Both Biden and Trump Should Have Stepped Aside And Let Someone Else Win Their Parties' Nominations;
As Trump and Biden Tie, Trump Leads 4 Other Hypothetical Dem Nominees by 7 to 14 Point Margins ... But Not Former First Lady Michelle Obama:

SurveyUSA's latest nationwide polling shows 62% of likely November voters say Joe Biden should have stepped aside and let someone else win the Democratic nomination, and 53% say the same about Donald Trump. Given that, SurveyUSA tested five other high-profile Democrats against the former President, and the bottom line is this: None do better than Biden, and the only one who does as well as the incumbent isn't in politics and hasn't shown interest in running.

One important caveat: polling hypothetical candidates is a tricky endeavor. Lower-profile names lead to higher numbers of undecided voters and third-party voters – many of whom would not be choosing those options in a "real" campaign, where they would know much more about the candidates than they do today. It's impossible to mirror the actual environment that would exist if different candidates were the presumptive nominee, which would include both positive and negative messaging about names which today, for the most part, are not part of this conversation.

That all said, here's how the matchups look today, from worst-to-best for the Democrats:
  • Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer falls to Trump by a 14-point margin, 46% to 32%. 11% of likely voters say they would vote for a candidate from another party; another 11% say they are undecided. Trump leads by 26 points by men and by a nominal 2 points among women; he leads by double-digits among voters of all age groups; he leads by 22 points among white voters and by 11 among Latinos. Black voters prefer Whitmer by a 10-point margin. 62% of those who voted for Biden in 2020 say they would vote for Whitmer in 2024, while 9% defect to Trump, 12% to a third party candidate, and 16% are undecided.
  • Another Democratic Governor, California's Gavin Newsom, loses to Trump by 12 points today, 45% to 33%, with 12% looking to a third-party candidate and 10% undecided. Trump's margin among older voters is smaller here than it is against Whitmer, but still significant; the former President leads by 14 points among 50 to 64-year-olds (compared to 19 points here against Whitmer) and by 7 (compared to 10 against Whitmer) among those 65+. 65% of 2020 Biden voters are with Newsom; 8% say they would switch to Trump, 14% to a third-party candidate; another 14% are undecided.
  • Transportation Secretary and 2020 candidate Pete Buttigieg also loses to Trump by double-digits, an 11-point margin of 46% to 35%. While Trump leads by 23 points among men, same as he does running against Newsom, Buttigieg has the nominal 1-point lead among women, and trails Trump by 5 points among the oldest and typically most reliable voters, compared to the 7-point lead Trump has among seniors when running against Newsom. 68% of Biden's 2020 voters go with Buttigieg; 8% switch to Trump; 10% go third-party, and 14% say they are undecided.
  • Fellow 2020 candidate and incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris closes the gap to single digits, but still is defeated by 7 points, 46% to 39%. She leads by 5 points among women, and by a nominal single point among those aged 65+. Trump leads by 11 points among 18 to 34-year-olds, and by 8 among those 35 to 64. Black voters – who backed Whitmer by a 10-point margin, Newsom by 18, and Buttigieg by 8 – support the VP by a 31-point margin, 60% to 29%. 77% of Biden's – and Harris' – 2020 voters vote for Harris at the top of the ticket; 8% go with Trump; 9% pick a third-party candidate; just 6% are undecided.
  • Joe Biden himself and Donald Trump are tied, each at 44%. 7% say they would vote for a candidate from another party; 6% say they are undecided in this 2020 rematch. Trump wins men by 13 points; Biden wins women by 11, a 24-point gender gap. Trump leads by 4 points among the youngest voters, Biden by 4 among the oldest; Trump nominally leads by 2 points among 50 to 64-year-olds, while those 35 to 49 split evenly. Biden holds 86% of his 2020 voters, 6% of whom say they'd vote for Trump, while 4% each are going third-party or undecided. Trump, for his part, holds 91% of his 2020 voters, with 2% switching to Biden, 3% to third party candidates, and 4% undecided. Trump wins white voters by 14 points; Biden wins Black voters by 44, Latinos by 5, and those of Asian or other descent by 26.
  • Finally, former First Lady Michelle Obama also ties Trump, with each candidate again at 44%. 6% say they'd vote for someone from another party; 5% are undecided. Obama performs 1 point worse with men than Biden does, but 3 points better with women; she runs 4 points more strongly than Biden among voters under age 50, but 2 points worse than Biden among those 50+. Obama does 2 points better among white voters than Biden, but 5 points worse among Black voters – a finding SurveyUSA strongly believes would be otherwise in an actual campaign environment. While Biden and Michelle Obama run similarly on most issues, one of the more interesting differences appears among those voters who say national security is the most important issue in this election: while Trump leads all the other Democratic names polled on this issue by margins of between 28 and 34 percentage points, he leads Michelle Obama here by just 5 points.
In other findings ...

Trump's support may be somewhat soft. In each of the six matchups, Trump's margins are higher – sometimes very significantly so – among those who say they will "probably" vote than among those who are "certain" to vote. Among probable voters, Trump's leads range from a high of 22 points (against Whitmer) to a low of 5 points (against both Biden and Michelle Obama). Among certain voters, Trump's leads range from a high of 12 points (against Whitmer) to trailing by a nominal single point against Michelle Obama.

23% of likely voters voted for the Democratic candidate in each of the six matchups. Among just that subset of "always-Democratic" voters, SurveyUSA asked which of the six names they would be most excited to vote for in November – and Joe Biden was the clear winner, with 53% selecting him, compared with 16% who said Michelle Obama (including 27% of rural always-Democrats); 10% who each said Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom (including highs of 22%, for both candidates, among parents of children under age 18); 7% who said Pete Buttigieg (including a high of 14% among upper-income always-Democrats), and 3% who said Gretchen Whitmer (including a high of 11% among those who say the economy is the most important issue.

SurveyUSA also asked likely November voters whether each of the country's last 7 Presidents were one of the very best, good, fair, poor, or one of the very worst. There are a few different ways to look at the numbers:
  • Barack Obama has the most voters listing him as one of the very best, 30%. That's just ahead of Ronald Reagan (27%), who in turn is just ahead of Donald Trump (24%). The partisan splits here are, as one might guess, huge. Obama is seen as one of the best by 59% of Democrats, 17% of independents, and just 8% of Republicans, 33% of whom say he is actually one of the very worst. Reagan is seen as one of the best by 46% of Republicans, 28% of independents, and 8% of Democrats – but just 9% of Democrats say Reagan was one of the very worst. Trump, meantime, is listed as being one of the very best by 53% of Republicans, 14% of independents, and 2% of Democrats. 69% of Democrats say Trump is one of the very worst, as do 33% of independents.
  • Just two Presidents are seen as being one of the very worst by significant numbers of voters – and they're running against one another this year. Donald Trump is seen as one of the very worst Presidents by 37% of likely 2024 voters, including the 69% of Democrats and 33% of independents we just mentioned – but just 5% of Republicans agree. Joe Biden is seen as one of the very worst by 35%, including 68% of Republicans and 37% of independents – and by only 3% of Democrats.
  • Finally, SurveyUSA creates a Net Score for each President by adding together their positive votes (one of the very best + good) and subtracting their negative votes (fair, poor, and one of the very worst). Results, from highest to lowest score:
    • Plus 18: Ronald Reagan. 56% have a positive view, 38% a negative view.
    • Plus 9: Barack Obama. 54% have positive views, 45% negative.
    • Minus 10: Bill Clinton. 43% have positive views, 53% negative views.
    • Minus 15: Donald Trump. 42% have a positive view, 57% a negative view.
    • Minus 22: George Bush. 37% have a positive view, 59% a negative view.
    • Minus 26: George W. Bush. 35% have a positive view, 61% a negative view.
    • Minus 34: Joe Biden. 32% have a positive view, 66% a negative view.
