Once Messaging is Shared, Republican John Deaton Leads Democrat Ed Markey in MA 2026 US Senate Race, Despite Deeply Unpopular Trump:

Moderate Republican John Deaton initially trails Democrat Ed Markey by 19 points in a hypothetical 2026 US Senate contest, according to SurveyUSA's latest polling for the MA Responsible Alliance (Q8 below). After initial biographical information is shared, Deaton leads Markey by 3 points (Q9 below). After additional information is shared with voters, Deaton's lead grows to 6 points (Q16), and when undecided voters are asked how they lean and those leaners are reallocated, Deaton leads by 7 (Q20).

Important context: Respondents in this poll were not exposed to any overt attacks against Deaton. During the course of an actual campaign, negative messages about Deaton and positive messages about his primary and general election opponents would also be in circulation. Deaton's performance in ballot test questions therefore should not be read as being predictive of what would actually happen in the 2026 elections, but instead should be viewed as reflective of the "lift" that the tested messaging could have.

Walking through the results ...

By 2:1 voters are dissatisfied with the direction of the country. Just 30% of MA voters today say things in the United States are going in the right direction; 60% say the country is off on the wrong track. Those who do say the country is headed in the right direction include very conservative voter (82%), Republicans (70%), and Trump voters (65%).

Voters were next asked how favorably or unfavorably they viewed Donald Trump, John Deaton, and Ed Markey:
  • Markey, with a Net Favorability rating of +21, is the only one of the three in positive territory, with 50% viewing him favorably (19% very favorably, 31% somewhat favorably) and 29% viewing him unfavorably (12% somewhat unfavorably, 17% very unfavorably). 12% say they have no opinion of Markey; 9% say they are not familiar with him. Markey's highest Net Approval, +70, is among Democrats; his lowest, -44, is among somewhat conservative voters.
  • Deaton is at -3 overall, with 25% having a favorable opinion (6% very favorable, 19% somewhat) and 28% a negative opinion (13% somewhat, 15% very). 20% say they have no opinion; 28% say they are not familiar with him. Deaton does best, +45, among very conservative voters (note these questions are asked before later messaging reminds voters that Deaton is a moderate, is pro-choice, and does not support President Trump). Deaton does worst, -46, among somewhat liberal voters.
  • Trump is deeply underwater in Massachusetts, -24, with 36% viewing him favorably (19% very, 17% somewhat) and 60% viewing him unfavorably (9% somewhat, 51% very). Just 3% have no opinion, and 0% are unfamiliar with him. Trump's best rating, +80, comes from the 35% of registered voters who say they voted for him in November. His lowest rating, -89, comes from the 49% who say they voted for Kamala Harris.
On the whole, voters are not significantly less likely to vote for a "moderate, pro-choice, common sense, centrist Republican candidate running for statewide office" now, with Donald Trump in the White House, than they were in 2022 when Joe Biden was in the White House. Asked how likely they would be to vote for such a candidate on a 1-10 scale in both cases, the average score for all voters is 5.4 under the Biden administration, 5.3 under the Trump administration. That said, there are larger shifts among various subgroups:
  • Somewhat liberal voters go from 4.8 under Biden to 4.1 under Trump, a shift of 0.7.
  • Harris voters also decline 0.7 points, from 4.6 to 3.9.
  • 0.5 point declines are seen in Southeast Massachusetts, among independent voters, and among both 35-to-49-year-olds and those over age 65.
  • Voters who have attended some college are 0.7 points more likely to vote for such a candidate today, under the Trump administration.
  • Very conservative voters are 0.8 points more likely to vote for such a candidate today.
  • Trump voters are 0.9 points more likely to vote for such a candidate now.
  • Latino voters are 1.1 points more likely to vote for such a candidate today.
  • Suffolk County voters are 1.3 points more likely to vote for such a candidate now, under the Trump administration.
Voters were initially asked how they would vote, having been given no further information that what appears in the questions analyzed above, at Q8, where 45% initially say they would vote for Ed Markey, 26% for John Deaton; a large 30% say they are undecided. Deaton at this point initially runs most strongly with Republicans (65%), very conservative voters, registered Republicans, and Trump voters (each 62%), and somewhat conservative voters (56%); he does not exceed 35% in any other demographic group.

Q9 gives voters background information about each candidate and then asks for the second time how they will vote. Deaton now takes 41% (a 15-point increase), Markey 38% (a 7-point decrease), while undecided falls 8 points, to 22%. Deaton's shift from a 19-point loss to a 3-point win represents a 22-point shift. Some of the largest flips in Deaton's vote:
  • Among men, Deaton had trailed by 12, now leads by 12, a 24-point swing.
  • Among 18 to 34-year-olds, Deaton trailed by 15, now leads by 2, a 17-point swing.
  • Among 35 to 49-year-olds, Deaton had trailed by 19, now leads by 6, a 25-point swing.
  • Among 50 to 64-year-olds, Deaton had trailed by 18, now leads by 6, a 24-point swing.
  • Among white voters, Deaton had trailed by 17, now leads by 4, a 21-point swing.
  • Among parents of children under age 18, Deaton had trailed by 15, now leads by 8, a 23-point swing.
  • Among independent voters, Deaton had trailed by 14, now leads by 11, a 25-point swing.
  • Among moderates, Deaton had trailed by 19, now leads by 3, a 22-point swing identical to the overall shift.
  • Among those with high school educations, Deaton swings 24 points, from -14 to +10.
  • Among those who attended some college, Deaton swings 19 points, from -6 to +13.
  • Among those with 4-year college degrees, Deaton swings 20 points, from -14 to +6.
  • Among those with household incomes between $40K and $80K, Deaton swings 32 points, from -18 to +14.
  • Among those with household incomes above $80K, Deaton swings 17 points, from -16 to +1.
Deaton's voters are slightly less committed than Markey's: 64% of Deaton voters say they will definitely vote for him; 36% say they probably will. 74% of Markey's voters say they will definitely vote for him; 26% probably will.

When undecided voters are pushed, 14% lean toward Deaton, 17% toward Markey; 69% say they are truly undecided. When those re-allocated voters are combined with the original voters from Q9 in Q13 below, Deaton remains 3 points atop Markey, though the numbers change: 44% Deaton, 41% Markey, 15% undecided.

Q14 advises voters that Deaton does not support and did not vote for President Trump. That makes 43% of registered voters say they are more likely to vote for Deaton, 13% less likely; 44% say it makes no difference. This does hurt Deaton a little among some key Republican voting blocs: among very conservative voters, 37% say this makes them less likely to vote for Deaton, 32% more likely; among Republicans, it's 31% less likely, 27% more likely. This is more likely to be a concern in a primary than in a general election.

Q15 advises voters that Markey will turn 80 next year, his 50th year in Washington. 47% say this makes them less likely to vote for Markey; 14% say it makes them more likely to vote for him. For 39%, it makes no difference.

Q16 asks, once again, how voters would vote. Now it's a 6-point Deaton lead, 41% to 35%, with 24% undecided. 15% of undecided voters lean toward each candidate, with 70% remaining truly undecided, and producing the final numbers shown in Q20 below: Deaton 45%, Markey 38%, with 17% undecided.

About the Research / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 900 adults from the state of Massachusetts 02/28/25 through 03/04/25. Of the adults, 775 were identified as being registered to vote and were asked the substantive questions which follow. This research was conducted online, using nonprobability sample of online adult panelists chosen randomly by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. The combined pool of survey respondents was weighted to US Census ACS targets for gender, age, race, education, and home ownership, and to party registration data so that registered Democrats have a 16-point advantage over registered Republicans.

6Think for a moment about a moderate, pro-choice, common sense, centrist Republican candidate running for a statewide office. When Joe Biden was President, say in the 2022 election - on a scale of 1-10, where 1 means not at all likely, and 10 means extremely likely, how likely would you have been to consider voting for a moderate, pro-choice, common sense, centrist Republican candidate for statewide office in 2022?

9Here is some additional information about Senator Ed Markey and John Deaton.

Ed Markey has been in elected office in Washington DC since 1976. Ed Markey has served as United States Senator since 2013 and lists his top priorities as climate change and enacting a Green New Deal, Medicare for all, and gun legislation. Before becoming a U.S. Senator, Markey served as a Congressman from 1976-2013. So, in 2026, at 80 years old, when he runs for reelection for U.S. Senate, it will be Markey's 50th year in Congress. Markey turns 80 years old in 2026, and if re-elected, would be 86 years old when his term in the Senate ends.

John Deaton was the Republican party's nominee for United States Senate in 2024 against Elizabeth Warren. Deaton describes himself as a moderate, pro-choice, common sense, centrist Republican, similar to former Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, who strongly believes in term limits. Deaton, who is 58 years old, was born into extreme generational poverty and his youth was marked by severe violence and sexual abuse. Despite this, Deaton became the only member of his family to graduate high school and college, going on to become a U.S. Marine Corps Officer, trial attorney, and author. Deaton authored a book called Food Stamp Warrior, detailing his own struggles against poverty, violence, including child rape, and addiction. After serving 7 years in the Marine Corps, Deaton has represented and won cases on behalf of working families victimized by the pharmaceutical industry, asbestos companies, insurance companies, and government overreach.
