Democrats' Pivot To Kamala Produces Immediate Results in Minnesota, Where VP Harris Now Leads Former President Trump By 10 Points;
Klobuchar Widens Leads in Likely Senate Match-Ups, DFL Candidates Increase Odds in MN House Races; JD Vance Not Seen As Great VP Choice:

Call it what you want: a Brat Summer Bounce, a Kamalanomenon, or just a new wave of enthusiasm among Democrats – one which may or may not extend into the fall – but SurveyUSA's latest exclusive polling for KSTP-TV Minneapolis, KAAL-TV Rochester, and WDIO-TV Duluth, existing in the context of Joe Biden metaphorically passing the torch to Kamala Harris, is producing good news for Democrats and DFL candidates up and down the ballot in Minnesota.

In five tracking polls conducted by SurveyUSA through the first half of this year, Joe Biden has never led Donald Trump by more than 6 points or by fewer than 2 points among Minnesota likely voters, with Biden's best showing, in mid-June, 47%.

Today, in SurveyUSA's first polling since Biden announced he was ending his Presidential campaign and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, Harris starts off 10 points atop Trump and 3 points better than Biden's best showing of 47%, leading Trump 50% to 40%. 4% of likely voters say they will vote for other candidates – a new low. 5% are undecided.

91% of Democrats vote for Harris; 89% of Republicans vote for Trump. Among Independents, five previous SurveyUSA polls showed Joe Biden tied with Trump once, leading Trump by 3 points three separate times, and leading Trump by 5 points once, last month. Today, Harris doubles that lead to 10 points, leading Trump 40% to 30% among the roughly 1-in-5 likely voters who say they are independents.

Harris runs 14 points ahead of Biden among the youngest voters, taking 46% of the vote of those under age 35, compared to Biden's 32% among those voters. While Biden trailed Trump by 20 points among 18 to 34-year-olds last month, Harris now nominally leads by a single point among that age group – a 21-point swing to the Democrats. Harris also runs 9 points better than Biden among the oldest voters, where she takes 55%, compared to Biden's 46% last month. Biden had led by 6 points among voters age 65+; Harris leads by 21, a 15-point improvement. Trump leads Harris by 7 points among men; Harris leads Trump by 27 points among women, a dramatic 34-point gender gap. Trump had led Biden by 8 among men, trailed Biden by 20 among women, a 28-point gap.

Democratic incumbent US Senator Amy Klobuchar widens her leads against two potential Republican opponents this month. Klobuchar defeats Navy vet and banker Joe Fraser by 21 points today in her bid for a fourth term, up from a 13-point lead last month, with Klobuchar 5 points since last month, and Fraser down 3. Klobuchar wins 54% to 33% today, with 4% voting for a candidate from another party and 10% undecided. Should Klobuchar instead face former NBA player Royce White, the numbers are similar, with Klobuchar at 55% and White at 33%. 4% again vote third party; 8% are undecided in this potential match-up. Klobuchar is up 6 points since last month; White is down 2.

Kamala Harris' rising tide appears to floating all Democratic and DFL boats at the moment: 50% of voters today say they are generally more inclined to vote for the Democrat in the Minnesota House election in their district, 40% for the Republican. 2% go third party; 7% are undecided. Over the past three months, Democrats have risen from 43% in May to 47% in June to 50% today, while Republicans have fallen from 45% in April, May, and June to 40% today.

When SurveyUSA asks those not voting for Donald Trump who Kamala Harris should choose as her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is the most-selected answer, at 22%. Second place goes to US Senator Amy Klobuchar, at 16%. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and US Senator from Arizona Mark Kelly are each at 10%; California Governor Gavin Newsom is the choice of 4%, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is at 3%, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear at 2%, and 1% each choose North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. 21% are not sure.

How good of a Vice Presidential choice is JD Vance for Donald Trump? Minnesota voters, by and large, aren't impressed. 32%, a plurality, say he is a "poor" choice; 18% say he is "good," 15% each say "excellent" and "fair." Adding it all together, that's 33% with an excellent or good view of the US Senator from Ohio, 47% with a fair or poor view. Subtracting 47 from 33 yields a net opinion of Minus 14. Very conservative voters are the most impressed, giving Vance a +77 net score – compared to a more muted +34 from somewhat conservative voters, -26 from moderates, -59 from somewhat liberal voters, and -75 from very liberal voters. Among those who say they are voting for Trump in November, Vance is at +54, with 36% calling him an excellent choice, 35% good, 16% fair, and 1% poor.

79% of non-Trump voters say they are satisfied with the process so far to select Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for President; 12% say they are not satisfied; 9% are not sure.

45% of likely voters say they disagree with Judge Aileen Cannon's decision to dismiss the classified documents case against Donald Trump, including 87% of very liberal voters, 77% of those voting for Harris, and 75% of Democrats. 38% agree with the decision, including 79% of Trump voters, 76% of very conservative voters, and 72% of Republicans.

Most voters are at least somewhat familiar with Project 2025: 53% are very (15%) or somewhat (38%) familiar with the document written by former Trump staffers. Another 22% say they are not very familiar with it; 21% aren't familiar with it at all, and 4% are not sure. 67% of Harris voters are very (19%) or somewhat (48%) familiar with it, compared to 39% of Trump voters (12% very familiar, 27% somewhat familiar.) When those who are very, somewhat, or not very familiar are asked how important a part of his administration the document will be if Trump is elected President, 68% say it will be a very important (40%) or somewhat important (28%) part, including 80% of Harris voters and 49% of Trump voters. 17% say it will be not very important (10%) or not at all important (7%).

About the Research / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 800 adults from the state of Minnesota 07/23/24 through 07/25/24. Of the adults, 725 were identified as being registered to vote; of the registered voters, 626 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the November general election and were asked the substantive questions which follow. This research was conducted online, using nonprobability sample of online adult panelists chosen randomly by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. The combined pool of survey respondents was weighted to US Census ACS targets for gender, age, race, education, and home ownership, and to recalled 2020 presidential vote.
