Independent Candidate Dan Osborn Has Advantage in Nebraska's US Senate Contest, Even as Incumbent GOP Governor Poised to Win 2nd Term:

SurveyUSA research conducted exclusively for Grant Forbes, LLC, shows independent Dan Osborn with a small advantage in his second run for United States Senator, though Nebraska's incumbent Republican governor is well-positioned to be re-elected to his seat.

For Governor, Republican Jim Pillen takes 43% of the vote today, 8 points atop Democrat Lynne Walz, a former state senator, at 35%. 13% of likely voters say they will vote for another candidate in the race; 9% are undecided.

Pillen and Walz run similarly strongly among their bases, with Pillen leading by 67 points among Republicans and 68 points among conservatives, while Walz leads by 65 points among Democrats and by 71 among liberals. Independents and moderates and both break for the Democrat, by margins of 30 and 26 points, respectively. Pillen leads by 15 points among men, Walz by 1 nominal point among women – a 16-point gender gap. Walz leads by 16 points among the youngest and typically least-reliable voters, while Pillen has a 3-point edge among voters 35 to 49, leads by 15 points among 50-to-64-year-old voters, and by 27 points among those 65+. Pillen wins voters with high school educations by a 26-point margin and those who have attended some college by 14 points; Walz wins those with college degrees by 10 points.

On the issues, Walz leads by 11 points among the 36% who say inflation and the cost of living is the most important issue to their vote, and by 44 points among the 10% most focused on healthcare. She also has a nominal 2-point advantage among the 5% of likely voters who say the war in Iran is their top issue. Pillen leads by 54 points among the 14% who say immigration and border security is most important, by 47 points among the 13% who say cutting taxes is their top issue, by 10 points among the 8% who say jobs and economic growth matter the most, and by 25 points among both the 4% who are most focused on crime and public safety and the 4% who say agriculture, farming, and food safety is the most important issue in their votes this year.

Turning to the race for US Senate, independent Dan Osborn, a mechanic and 2024 candidate for Nebraska's other US Senate seat, takes 46% today, while incumbent Republican Pete Ricketts takes 42%. 4% say they will vote for another candidate; 7% are undecided.

Osborn leads by 20 points among women; Ricketts leads by 11 points among men – a 31-point gender gap, roughly twice that in the gubernatorial contest. Osborn leads by an overwhelming 41 points among voters under age 35, 67% to 26%, and by a more modest but still significant 15 points among voters 35 to 49. Ricketts leads by 7 among 50-to-64-year-olds and by 28 among voters 65+.

On the party and ideology front, independent Osborn runs more strongly among the Democratic base than Democrat Walz does in the race for Governor. Osborn leads by 85 points among Democrats, by 89 points among very liberal voters, and by 67 points among somewhat liberal voters. Ricketts, meanwhile, has a 64-point lead among Republicans, 14% of whom vote for Osborn and a solid 73-point lead among very conservative voters – but leads by 46 points among somewhat conservative voters, 24% of whom vote for Osborn – about twice as many as the 13% of somewhat liberal voters who vote for Ricketts. Independents and moderates are squarely behind Osborn, by margins of 51 points and 47 points respectively.

On the issues, some differences from the gubernatorial contest. Osborn leads by 26 points among those who say inflation and the cost of living is most important, by 48 points among those who say healthcare is their top issue, and by 8 points among those who say crime and public safety is most important – an issue where Pillen leads by 25 points. Ricketts leads by 75 points among those who say immigration and border security is their top issue, by 15 points among agriculture voters, and by 8 points among those most-focused on the war in Iran. Support is divided for those focused on jobs and economic growth, where Osborn has a nominal single-point advantage, and those focused on taxes, where Ricketts has the same one-point nominal lead.

In a small sample of NE-02 likely voters, Democrat Denise Powell, a Democratic activist and political consultant, takes 46% of the vote to Republican Brinker Harding's 42%. Harding, a city council member in Omaha, leads by 22 points among men, while Powell leads by 35 points among women ‐ an unusually large 57-point gender gap. The age split seen in the other contests is also present here, with Powell up by 25 points among voters under age 50 and Harding up by 20 among those 50+. 95% of Democrats in the district and 100% of very liberal voters in the district say they will vote for Powell, while Harding's support among his base appears softer – 81% of Republicans and 76% of very conservative voters say they will vote for him. Caution should be used in extrapolating from the small number of likely voters in this contest.

Taking a look at net favorability numbers for these candidates and the President, which are calculated by subtracting those with negative opinions from those with positive opinions, SurveyUSA notes all but one name, Denise Powell, is in negative numbers:
  • +4: Denise Powell. 38% of NE-02 registered voters have favorable opinions of Powell (20% very favorable, 18% somewhat favorable); 34% have unfavorable opinions (11% somewhat unfavorable, 23% very unfavorable). Another 27% say they are not familiar with Powell.
  • -2: Dan Osborn. Osborn is viewed favorably by 43% of registered voters statewide (19% very favorable, 24% somewhat favorable), unfavorably by 45% (15% somewhat unfavorable, 30% very unfavorable). 11% are unfamiliar with him.

About the Research/Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 680 adults from the entire state of Nebraska 09/08/26 through 09/13/26 using a mixed mode, blended sample approach. Of the adults, 595 were determined to be registered voters statewide and 200 registered voters in Nebraska's 2nd congressional district; these are the voters who were asked the favorability questions shown in Q2-Q8 below; of the registered voters, 503 were determined to be likely to vote in the November statewide general election and 182 likely to vote in the NE-02 general election, and were asked the likely voter questions in Q10-Q13 below. 54% of likely voters were interviewed on the display of their smartphone, tablet or other electronic device using non-probability sample of internet panel members provided by Cint USA. 46% were interviewed using probability-based telephone sample of registered voters from Aristotle of Washington, DC, with 17% interviewed on their landline telephones in the recorded voice of a professional announcer and 29% interviewed using SMS-to-Web, where a live operator hand-texted respondents on their mobile phones, secured their cooperation, and linked them to an online version of the survey. The full pool of respondents was weighted to US Census-derived targets for gender, age, ethnicity, education, and region, and to state of Nebraska voter registration statistics.
