Results of SurveyUSA Election Poll #27966

With Inflation Topping List of Voter Issues, DFL Candidates Have Advantage in 3 of 5 Statewide Minnesota Races; Other Two Are Tied:

DFL candidates have the early advantage in the November elections for US Senate and Secretary of State, and are poised to easily retain the governorship, according to SurveyUSA's latest exclusive polling for KSTP-TV Minneapolis, KAAL-TV Rochester, and WDIO-TV Duluth.

In the contest to replace Tim Walz as Governor, DFL candidate Amy Klobuchar today takes 52% of the vote to Republican Lisa Demuth's 36%, with 1% voting for Green Party candidate Steven Young and 12% undecided. Demuth leads by 81 points among very conservative and 65 points among somewhat conservative voters; by 74 points among Republicans; and by 73 points among those who voted for Donald Trump in 2024. Among those voters who say fraud is the most important issue in the election – 15% of the electorate – Demuth leads by 69 points. Among those who say immigration is the top issue – 8% of likely voters – Demuth leads by 39. Demuth also leads by 10 points in rural Minnesota, by 9 in Western MN, and by 8 points among those with high school educations. Klobuchar leads by 99 points among somewhat liberal and by 91 points among very liberal voters, by 94 points among Democrats, and by 90 points among those who voted for Kamala Harris in 2024. On the issues, Klobuchar leads by 64 points among the 11% who say healthcare is the most important issue, by 35 points among the 35% who say inflation and the cost of living is most important, by 34 points among the 5% most focused on the war in Iran, and by 16 points among the 6% who say gas prices are the top issue. Klobuchar leads by 32 points among moderates and by 17 points among independent voters, and by an overwhelming 43 points among the youngest voters, but by smaller margins of 9 points among those 35 to 49, 12 points among those 50 to 64, and 6 points among those 65+.

The race to replace Tina Smith in the US Senate is tighter, with DFL candidate Peggy Flanagan starting off 5 points ahead of Republican Michele Tafoya, 46% to 41%, with 1% each saying they would vote for Libertarian Rebecca Whiting and independent Marisa Simonetti, and 11% undecided. 89% of liberals and 87% of Democrats vote for Flanagan, while 85% of conservatives and 87% of Republicans vote for Tafoya. Moderates break for Flanagan by an 8-point margin, 44% to 36%, while independents nominally prefer Tafoya by a single point. Men vote for Tafoya by a 6-point margin, women for Flanagan by 16 points, a 22-point gender gap. Issues break down similarly as in the gubernatorial race, though Flanagan's lead on inflation/cost of living voters is 17 points, half that of Klobuchar's on that issue, and Tafoya has a slim 2-point advantage among those who say gas prices are the top issue, while those same voters prefer Klobuchar by 16 points. Flanagan leads by 36 points among 18-to-34-year-olds, by 3 among those 35 to 49; Tafoya leads by 5 among voters 50 to 64 and by 8 among seniors. Flanagan is up by 26 points among those with college degrees; Tafoya leads by 5 points among those who attended some college and by 22 among those with high school educations. Regionally, Flanagan leads by 15 points in the greater Twin Cities area, by 18 points in urban parts of the state, and by 13 points in the suburbs; Tafoya leads by 22 points in Western MN, by 8 in the Northeast, and by 7 in Southern Minnesota, as well as by 20 points among rural voters.

Incumbent DFL Attorney General Keith Ellison and Republican challenger Ron Schutz are tied today, 43% each, with 15% of likely voters telling SurveyUSA they are undecided. Schutz has never led Ellison in three previous polls on the race over the summer, but is up 7 points from the most recent poll, two weeks ago, while Ellison is down 1 point. Schutz leads by 10 points among men, Ellison by 12 among women – a 22-point gender gap identical to that in the Senate race. Moderates prefer the DFL candidate by 7 points, but independents prefer the Republican by 10.

Further down the ticket, incumbent DFL candidate Steve Simon leads Republican Tad Jude by 7 points in the Secretary of State election, 41% to 34%. 4% say they will vote for a third-party candidate; 20% say they are undecided, making any outcome possible in November.

The race for State Auditor, like that for Attorney General, is tied, with the DFL's Zach Filipovich and Republican Scott Jensen each taking 39% of the vote today, 3% voting for another party's candidate, and 19% undecided.

About the Research / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 900 adults from the state of Minnesota 08/13/26 through 08/17/26 using nonprobability sample of internet panel members provided by Cint USA. Of the adults, 800 were identified as being registered to vote; of the registered voters, 661 were identified as being probably or definitely likely to vote in the November general election and asked the substantive questions which follow. The combined pool of survey respondents was weighted to US Census ACS targets for gender, age, race, education, and home ownership. In an alternate scenario, SurveyUSA also included less-likely voters – the 12% of registered voters who said they might or might not vote in November – in the likely voter universe. Adding those less-likely voters unsurprisingly increases the number of undecided voters, but also provides a small bump to both Republican and third party candidates in most cases. Motivating these voters to cast ballots in November may well make the difference in the contests that today are tied.
