Minnesota Primary Update: Republicans Mike Lindell, Michele Tafoya Consolidate Support; DFL Flanagan Gains to Tie Craig For Senate Nod:

With in-person absentee voting underway and early in-person voting about to begin, SurveyUSA's latest polling for KSTP-TV Minneapolis, KAAL-TV Rochester, and WDIO-TV Duluth shows the front-runners adding to their gains in the Republican primaries for both Minnesota Governor and US Senate, while the DFL Senate primary contest moves into a tie.

In the Republican Primary for Governor, MyPillow founder and MAGA activist Mike Lindell gains 8 points from last month's poll to take 35% of the vote, while State House Speaker Lisa Demuth climbs 4 points to 26% and tech exec Kendall Qualls loses 6 points to land at 11%. 5% of likely voters say they will vote for one of the other Republicans in the contest; 22% are undecided.

Demuth leads Lindell meaningfully among independent voters (9 points; 13% of likely voters), among those who say inflation and the cost of living are the most important issues (6 points, 23% of likely voters), among those with 4-year college degrees (4 points, 34% of voters), and among those voters who say they will vote for Michele Tafoya in the Senate primary (4 points, 41% of voters). Demuth also edges Lindell in Northeastern Minnesota (3 points) and in urban parts of the state (2 points), and holds nominal single-point leads among those who attended some college and those who describe themselves as somewhat conservative. Lindell, however, has the advantage among all other demographic groups save those with the highest household incomes, where he and Demuth are tied.

In the Republican Primary for US Senate, former sportscaster Michele Tafoya today sees 41% of the vote, up from 36%, defeating former NBA player and 2024 Senate nominee Royce White at 10% (down from 15%), retired Navy officer Tom Weiler at 7% (unchanged), and retired Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze at 5% (down from 7%). 8% would vote for someone else; 28% are undecided. Tafoya leads among all demographic subgroups.

Moving to the DFL Primary for US Senate, Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan had trailed MN-02 representative Angie Craig by 5 points one month ago, 41% to 36%; today, the race is tied, with 40% of likely voters choosing each candidate, another 4% saying they would vote for another DFL candidate, and 16% undecided. Flanagan's strongest lead, 30 points, comes from the third of likely DFL voters who say they are very liberal; she also leads by 24 points in Northeastern MN, by 23 points among renters, by 19 points among those with the lowest household incomes, and by 16 points in urban parts of the state. Flanagan is also ahead by high single digits in rural areas and among those who say they are somewhat liberal. Flanagan leads by 9 points among voters age 50 to 64, by a single nominal point among 35 to 49-year-olds, and by 4 points among those under 35. Meanwhile, Craig leads by 15 points among voters age 65+, typically the most reliable voters in a primary. Craig's largest leads are 47 points among the relatively small number of conservative voters in the DFL primary (7% of voters), and 32 points among the more significant number of moderates, 29% of the electorate. She also leads Flanagan by 33 points among the 6% of voters who say they have already cast their ballots, by 12 points among both those with high school educations and in the suburbs, and by 11 points in Southern MN.

Finally, we see some tightening in the November general election match-up for Attorney General. Last month, incumbent DFL candidate Keith Ellison led attorney Ron Schutz by 7 points, 44% to 37%; today, Schutz gains one point and Ellison loses two, reducing his lead to a 4-point edge. One of the larger shifts in the race is seen among voters 65+, where Ellison had led by 3, now trails by 7. This is somewhat offset by independent voters, where Schutz had led by 2, now trails by 5.
